On February 3, 2013, we once again visited and talked to Watanabe, who was restoring his house that was destroyed by the tsunami.
About 1955, Watanabe’s grandfather was responsible for looking after the floodgate at the Teizan canal which ran in front of his home. Everyone would swim either naked or wearing loincloths while covered in mud. In 1965, Watanable embarked on a longline fishing boat departing from Shichigahama, set to catch tuna near the Hawaiian islands. During the typhoon after the disaster, a four-meter-long sunfish at the nearby estuary…
